tellusboutyourself : Yerin Baek Herself and Being An Artist
“if you want to become like me have your window open at midnight” — Yerin Baek
Someone said “Know yourself first before others”. We know precisely that this kind of narrations about self-love and self-acknowledge is being a trend lately. Many artists and musician use this moment to tell and express who they really are. As well as Yerin Baek, she released her new album tellusboutyourself which mainly “tell us about Yerin Baek herself” and being rejected by netter because of her style-changing-song.
After Every letter I sent to you album, Yerin Baek released her second studio album tellusboutyourself on December 10, 2020. The album consists of 14 songs and was published by Blue Vinyl, Yerin Baek’s independent record label. From her interview with Bandwagon, she said “With tellusboutyourself, my fans will get to listen to my current taste and traces of thoughts because it’s a compilation of songs that I want to perform on stage at the present time. I hope it shows that I’m capable of telling more than love stories, and that it’s all-English lyrics engenders opportunities to meet my fans across the globe,”. The spirit of this album is about telling who Yerin Baek really is and her intention to get fans across the world.
The songs in this new album have different atmosphere from her current songs. In this new album, Yerin Baek takes synth-pop and deep house sound as a main vibe of the whole songs. The energy of tellusboutyourself is such as our deepest emotion that we always keep year by year, but now we can keep it anymore and finally explode. One of the tracks, Hate You, has a really dark and heavy atmosphere. It is like all of her hatred is expressed through this track, but actually she want this song as an advice to who she really care about. “It probably has the most amount of swearing out of all of my songs. I’m often told that my voice is thin and delicate, so I’m very interested to see what it’d be like for people to hear my voice in this kind of song,” said Yerin Baek to Bandwagon. I, personally, recommend you to listen for this song and read the lyric carefully.
Unfortunately, many people in South Korean could not easily receive this album. They don’t understand why a Korean singer makes an entire album in English. Even her first album got a lot positive responds from people, tellusboutyourself is not seen so. Some people keep compare the songs in album with her current song, such as Bye bye my blue. They said that her new songs are getting boring.
As an artist this kind of struggle is really normal. If there are some who like your works, there are some people who don’t like it or think that your previous works are better than now–if you have many works before−. Tellusboutyourself has a different “color” in Yerin Baek discography where she shows her growth and evolution since her first solo in 2015. “Telling about yourself” concept is such a gambling if I could say. However, Yerin Baek could get her own market and tell what her “color” for present. This album is more than a love story, it is a “where you being a human” story.
